"How to get more vocations"

From the blog "The Daily Homily"
By Fr. Farfaglia

Today, the Catholic Church remembers Blessed Junipero Serra. The Spanish Franciscan missionary priest is a major figure in the early missionary work of the Catholic Church in California and Mexico.

A Catholic international organization called Serrans International has taken Fr. Serra as their patron saint. According to their website, the objectives and goals of the organization are 1) to foster and promote vocations to the ministerial priesthood in the Catholic Church as a particular vocation to service, and to support priests in their sacred ministry; 2) to encourage and affirm vocations to consecrated religious life in the Catholic Church; and 3) to assist its members to recognize and respond in their own lives to God's call to holiness in Jesus Christ and through the Holy Spirit.

As we remember Father Junipero Serra and his tremendous missionary activity, we are once again reminded of the importance of vocations to the Catholic priesthood and the religious life. In this country, vocations to the priesthood are increasing; however it is still true that many dioceses face serious shortages for the near future.

It is true that we all need to pray and promote vocations, but it is important that we take a good look at the dioceses that have large numbers of young men studying for the priesthood. We should ask ourselves what is the secret to their success?
